Tonson Publications Inc. was founded 40 years ago by Mr. Chen Lung-hao in 1982, with the purpose of publishing leftist, non-mainstream books that give a voice to the disadvantaged and to protect their rights. In 1984, Tonson Bookstore was established to continue to work in the same direction/spirit as the publishing house. As a bookstore specializing in selling humanities and social sciences books,  it has become symbolic of the progress Taiwan has made over the years. Students with a forward-thinking mindset must visit the bookstore.
Tonson Bookstore has moved three times. However, to save on rent, it has always been in the basement. Thus, it describes itself in a label attached to the store as follows: We create a sea of knowledge in the dim light of the basement for you to dive into.
