Description
Baxian Cave Visitor Center is located at Baxian Cave with geological sights and pre-historic sites. It is located on a cliff, with tens of naturally corroded sea caves, facing the sea in Changbin Township of Taitung County. These caves were originally at water level, but they are now scattered on a cliff face 150 meters high. It is due to the waves corroding the softer parts of the rock face during the process of the rising of crust in the eastern coastal regions. Bashian Caves currently has trails leading to all sea caves. Out of which, Lingyan Cave is the biggest; Kunlun Cave is the highest, being 130 meters high; and others include Chienyuan Cave, Joucheng Cave, Hailay Cave, Chaoyin Cave, Yongan Cave, and Shuilian Cave. Most caves were occupied by altars, so the caves have quite a religious atmosphere. Bashian Caves is also a integral pre-historic site. A rich pre-cermaic culture from the Paleolithic Age was once discovered here, named "Changbin Culture." It is the oldest pre-historic cultural site known to date in Taiwan. It has been listed as a Grade I National Historic Site due to its importance.
