Located by the riverside in Gongguan is the Treasure Hill Artist Village. Its historic trajectory covers the municipal ancient monument of the Baozangyan Temple, as well as the historical settlement extended from the aforementioned Temple. The settlement was formed with clusters of buildings illegitimately constructed in the 1960s and 1970s. These buildings were constructed alongside the hills and the river, intertwining, meandering and complex, showcasing Taiwan’s unique appearance of settlement. In 2004, Treasure Hill was officially recorded as a historical building and has since been preserved in the name of revitalized settlements. In the year end of 2006, Department of Cultural Affairs of Taipei City Government started the settlement renovation work. On October 2, 2010, Treasure Hill Artist Village officially opened for operation and brought in such schemes as “Treasure Homes”, “Residencies” and “Youth Assembly”, based on the concept of “Settlement Co-op”, to revitalize Treasure Hill via the dual approach of art and residency and to enrich the settlement diversity. Treasure Hill Artist Village serves as a bridging platform between the settlement residents and residency artists, while injecting renewed vitality into Treasure Hill. Currently in Treasure Hill Artist Village are installed with 14 artists’ studios as the working and living space for domestic and overseas residency artists. In addition, rehearsal rooms, exhibition rooms and outdoor performance space are also in place. To look out from the green space by the riverside at the bottom of the settlement, one can see a desolate scene of broken walls extended into a cross section in history and further contributing to the rich historic narratives and clues of the diversifying and multi-layered spatial structures when one attempts to decode Treasure Hill. Built with 7 rooms, the Attic Hostel officially opened in April 2014. The Attic Hostel will be part of the settlement path and intends to reveal the nicking of time and to embody the living domain of a human settlement. Meanwhile it will open itself up to experience the world, that is, for a conversation to unfold between the world and the integration of the nature’s domain spirits and the human abode’s domain spirits.
