Description
Astoria was founded in 1949 by Mr. Archiybold Chien and five Russian immigrants who fled to Taiwan and offer a nostalgic European setting. In its earlier times, Astoria offered Russian cuisine and coffee, offering an exotic taste that attracted many patrons from Taipei. Cafe Astoria later became a literary salon for near modern Taiwan. Renowned writers and cultural personalities such as Sanmao, Pai Hsien-yung, Huang Chunming, Lin Hwai-min, and Chen Yingzhen also became famous patrons, and could muse about various subjects over a cup of coffee for an entire day. Astoria is where many moving literary works and stars are born. The borscht offered by Astoria is a popular favorite for many patrons. Astoria also offers Russian soft candy and walnut cakes, reputedly the favorite choice of Mdm. Faina Chiang Fang-liang, that should not be missed.
