The phrase “wendao,” which means “my house” in Taiwanese Hokkien, carries with it a sense of human warmth that is unique to the land itself. It also tends to evoke childhood memories when local people hear it spoken. It was as if they could see in their minds an elder family member inviting neighbors to the house while saying something like “come to ‘wendao’ to spend some time, have some tea, have a meal, or chat with us.” As someone growing up on this island, we feel that we have the responsibility to protect Taiwan’s unique cultural essence and hospitality against an environment full of uncertainty.
